Nunwick's Seventies

1970

The first team trophy is secured by being runner up in the EVCL Division 1 to local rivals Staffield who totalled 76 points compared to Nunwick’s 66. The EVCL had combined the first and second divisions in 1965 and this continued to be a one divsion league until the 1976 season.

1973

The club bestows the highest accolade it can by giving life membership to Les Carrick and Tot Dunbar, the latter for umpiring services with the club. This year also saw Victor Gubbins take the batting averages with aggregate runs of 268 returning a very respectable average of 38.3 runs. Also Norman Osborne the son-in-law of the Nunwick head gardener took the fielding trophy with 13 catches.

1974

A very remarkable feat occurred this year as Barry Kendal topped the Division bowling averages with a very respectable average of 3.98 from his record wicket haul of a 106 victims. The record still stands today and with bowling restrictions in place unlikely to be over hauled. Although it was a close call the following season when Lowther’s John Dent took 105 wickets. It has not been recorded what the split was, of Barry’s wickets between Bowled, Caught or LBW.

1975

This year saw Norman Osborne secure his second fielding trophy snapping up 20 catches from his usual fielding positions of short mid-off or short mid-on and with hands like buckets very little got past him.

1977

Nunwick awarded its third life membership to George Baxter who had also worked on the estate as Head Gardener. While his son-in-law Norman Osborne completed the hat trick of fielding trophies in 4 years snaring 8 unsuspecting victims.

1979

Terry “Tex” Taylor recorded the highest individual score of the season in division 1 with 90 not out.
